Making the transition from student to alum

The Duke Student Alumni Board works to foster communication and collaboration among students and alumni. Members get involved in Duke Alumni programs, conceive and plan student engagement activities and help spread the spirit of Forever Duke among their peers.

What We Do

Board members are chosen from all years and areas of Duke to reflect the diversity of the student experience. Responsibilities include:

  • Serving as student ambassadors for the DAA and the Duke Office of Development
  • Providing advice and feedback about new and existing programs for student and alumni engagement
  • Attending board and alumni events
  • Representing student views on panels
  • Developing and implementing strategies for outreach to students
  • Organizing events for the Duke community

Catherine Alexander BSE'22
Area of Study: Mechanical Engineering
School: Pratt

Catherine is a sophomore from Richmond, Virginia, who is looking to study Mechanical Engineering with a certificate in Aerospace Engineering. Inside of the classroom, she particularly enjoys her design courses, and is in the midst of the patent application process with her group for a first semester project. She plans to serve as a First-Year Advisory counselor for the 2019-20 school year. Her extracurricular interests include fitness, spending time outside, and astronomy. 

Angela Anaeme

Angela Anaeme BS'22
Area of Study: Evolutionary Anthropology
School: Trinity

Angela Anaeme is a freshman from Gilbert, Arizona in the Trinity College of Arts and Sciences at Duke University. She is pursuing an undergraduate degree in Evolutionary Anthropology and Global Health with hopes to pursue a career in medicine. Through these disciplines, she hopes to approach the field of medicine through a more humanitarian lens and better understand the disparities in health care quality throughout various cultures and communities. Angela comes from a multicultural background herself, as her mother immigrated from the Philippines while her father immigrated from Nigeria. Her unique heritage has played a significant role in her upbringing, and she is passionate about giving back to her family's community. Consequently, she has created her own community service program, Project Balikbayan, which collects donated clothes, toys, and non-perishable goods to ship to the orphanage in her family's hometown of Pampanga, Philippines. Angela also works as a medical assistant at a wound care facility in Arizona during her visits back home, where she has fostered many relationships with the patients. Extracurricularly, Angela is a member of the Duke Dancing Devils and works as a Resident Assistant on East Campus. In her spare time, she enjoys listening to music, playing violin and piano, and watching movies.

Ryan Arredondo JD'20
Area of Study: Juris Doctor
School: Law

Ryan Arredondo is a third-year law student from Phoenix, AZ. He graduated from the University of Arizona in 2013 and worked in Phoenix for 4 years as an actuarial analyst & consultant before coming to Duke. This past summer, he worked as a summer associate at Schulte, Roth & Zabel in New York. At Duke Law, Ryan has served as Co-President of 1st Generation Professionals, Treasurer of the Latin American Law Students Association, a member of the Moot Court Board, and most importantly as the closer for the Fall 2017 Duke Law Bowling League Championship team and a player for the 2019 Duke Intramural Men's Basketball Championship team.

Bradley Barth PhD'22
Area of Study: Biomedical Engineering (Electrobiology), Certificate in College Teaching
School: Pratt

Bradley Barth is a Ph.D. candidate in Biomedical Engineering, and he received a B.S. from Cornell University, in 2015. Currently, he investigates sacral nerve stimulation as a treatment for gastrointestinal motility disorders. Bradley received an honorable mention from the NSF Graduate Research Fellowship in 2017, and the Dean's Award for Excellence in Mentoring in 2018. Bradley is involved with the Scientific Research and Education Network, connecting STEM researchers with educators to disseminate cutting edge science and improve science literacy in K-12 schools.

Cara Becker BS'22
Areas of Study: Public Policy and Economics
School: Trinity

Cara is a sophomore from Great Neck, New York studying Economics and Public Policy. At Duke, she is involved in the Duke Association for Business Oriented Women (BOW) and was a member of the High School Mentorship Committee, where she helped plan mentorship programs and designed lesson plans. She will serve as Membership Chair for BOW for the 2019-2020 academic year, in which she will help manage recruitment by coordinating campus marketing efforts, and her main goal is to bridge the gap between business and community. Cara is also involved in other student organizations on campus including the First-Year Advisory Council Program and House Council. She spent previous summers interning for public officials and spent her summer before freshman year assisting in marketing and academic research for iTutor.com. In her free time, she enjoys running, the outdoors, and spending time with friends and family. She is excited to join the Duke Student Alumni Board and facilitate connections between students and alumni.

Natalie Benderly BS'20
Areas of Study: Neuroscience, Innovation and Entrepreneurship
School: Trinity

Natalie is a senior from New York City studying Neuroscience and Innovation and Entrepreneurship. On campus, she is the Executive Vice President of the Tamid Group, an intern at DuWell, and a fellow for the Duke Innovation and Entrepreneurship Initiative. This past summer, Natalie worked in NYC as a strategy intern for Teneo, an advisory firm for CEOs.

Lance Bennett DPT'20
Area of Study: Physical Therapy
School: Medicine

Lance Bennett is a native of Atlanta, Ga. and is currently a second-year physical therapy student in the School of Medicine. Lance graduated from Morehouse College as a student-athlete with his Bachelor's degree in Kinesiology, in addition, has earned his Master's degree in Exercise Science from Auburn University. When Lance is not in class or serving as a graduate assistant in the physical therapy program, he enjoys spending time in the gym and exploring around Durham.

Molly Bruce JD/MEM'21
Area of Study: Juris Doctor, Master of Environmental Management
School: Law, Nicholas

Molly was born and raised outside of Charlotte, NC before coming to Durham to attend high school at the NC School of Science and Math.  Molly is a dual degree graduate student with Duke's School of Law and Duke's Nicholas School of the Environment.  Her studies focus on environmental law and coastal environmental management--specifically, the use of GIS, drones, and other aerial surveying methods as tools for considering how coastal regions can adapt to climate change and how the global community can better-safeguard natural resources.  Prior to Duke, Molly was involved in the affordable housing movement as a member of the Durham Habitat for Humanity team, a partner with Habitat for Humanity of Orange County, and a cyclist for Bike & Build.  Molly graduated from UNC Chapel Hill with degrees in Geography and Global Studies and a minor in Hispanic Studies. In her free time, she likes to ride her road bike, backpack, fly with her family, and look for other excuses to enjoy the NC sunshine.

School: Trinity

Lily is a member of the Class of 2022 from Long Island, New York. She is planning on studying Public Policy and Computer Science but is still open to finding new passions. Along with her academics and DSAB, Lily is a member of the Duke Lady Blue female a cappella group on campus. On her free time you can find Lily cheering on various sports teams or in any coffee shop on campus.

Bates Crawford AB'22
Areas of Study: English, Ethics & Society
School: Trinity

Bates is a sophomore at Duke from New York City. She plans on majoring in English, pursuing an Ethics & Society Certificate, and is considering a minor in Sociology. At Duke, Bates writes for the Features section of The Standard, an online magazine, and is the VP of Adult Tutor Programming for GANO (Gente Aprendiendo Para Nuevas Oportunidades). As part of DSAB, she is very excited to meet many new fascinating Duke alumni and students. In her spare time, Bates enjoys watching crime and mystery TV shows/documentaries, seeing Broadway shows, spending time with her family/friends/dogs, and exploring Duke and Durham!

Travis Dauwalter PhD'22
Area of Study: Public Policy
School: Graduate

Travis Dauwalter is a third year PhD Student pursuing a joint degree in Public Policy and Economics. He served as the President of the Graduate and Professional Student Council (GPSC) during the 2018-2019 Academic Year. Travis' research will focus on how electricity markets can be designed to reduce inequities. Previously, he was the Director of Business Development for an Engineering, Procurement, and Construction firm that designs and constructs mid-size power plants. He earned a B.S. in Aeronautical Engineering from the United States Air Force Academy, an MBA from Pennsylvania State University, and an MA in Economics from Columbia University. Travis is married with two young children. He has no free time.

Charlotte Fontham AB'22
Area of Study: Psychology
School: Trinity

Charlotte is a sophomore from Alexandria, VA whose academic interests include psychology, education, and Italian. Outside of the classroom, she sings in the Chorale and works for the Annual Fund Phonathon. Charlotte is an appreciator of musical theater and other live performances, and she enjoys attending events at the Durham Performing Arts Center and the Carolina Theatre.

Reid Herrera AB'20
Area of Study: Public Policy, Science & Society
School: Trinity

Reid Herrera grew up in Charlotte, North Carolina and previously attended the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics in Durham. A senior majoring in Public Policy and receiving a certificate in Science and Society, Reid is interested in a career in science policy. In his time at Duke, Reid has participated in the FOCUS program, DukeEngage, and Duke in Glasgow. Reid is the president of the Chi Psi fraternity and enjoys representing Duke athletics by playing the flute with the Duke University Marching Band.

Kent Hjelm BS'22
Area of Study: Economics, Philosophy
School: Trinity

Kent, a member of the class of 2022, is from right outside of Philadelphia. He is pursuing a major in Economics and a minor in Spanish. Beyond the classroom, Kent enjoys playing lacrosse for the club team, of which he is the president, playing pickup basketball and following anything and everything related to Philadelphia sports teams. Coming to Duke, Kent was most interested in the expansive and impressive alumni network and he is excited to meet these alumni and talk with them about their shared love for this university.

Naomi Hodges AB'21
Area of Study: International Comparitive Studies, Sociology, Spanish
School: Trinity

Naomi is a Durham native with a deep love for the city that Duke calls home. She is pursuing a degree in International Comparative Studies and minors in Spanish and Sociology. Coming from a single parent, low-income household she is very passionate about and involved with Duke LIFE (Low-income, First Generation). Naomi is also co-president of SWIRL (Students with Interracial Legacies). She has a love reading so most afternoons she can be found working in the Duke Gothic bookshop. Although being allergic to all kinds of fur, Naomi adores animals. She hopes to go on to law school after graduation. Her favorite thing to do is travel.

Chloe Hubbe AB'22
Area of Study: Public Policy, Finance
School: Trinity

Chloe Hubbe is currently a freshman at Duke, and her intended major is Public Policy with a minor in Finance.  Aside from academics, she is part of the tour guide program, Business Oriented Women, the club tennis team, and DukeStudents.  Off campus, Chloe also serves on the National Council of College Leaders in order to help find cures for Crohn's Disease and Ulcerative Colitis.

Nadim Hussein DPT'21
Area of Study: Physical Therapy
School: Medicine

Nadim is a Brasilian native who grew up a diehard Duke fan and is now living out his wildest dreams attending this university. There are two phrases that best describe Nadim - "the secret to happiness is maintaining the spirit of a child" - himself and "Do the best you can until you know better. Then when you know better, do better" - Maya Angelou. He has a deep passion for travel and culture, knowing 4 languages and visiting almost 20 countries. His life goals include positively impacting as many lives as possible and visiting every country on Earth. If you ever need to contact him you can find him front row at every Duke basketball home game wearing a bright yellow construction vest.

A native of Buffalo, N.Y. Nicholas completed his education in the Buffalo Public Schools. Nicholas continued on to Buffalo State College, where he majored in Music Education. After receiving his Bachelor's degree, he went on to Michigan State University where he received his Master's of Educational Leadership. Nicholas is now a second-year Master of Divinity Student at Duke University. Nicholas is also the Senior Pastor of Oak Grove AME Zion Church in Erwin, N.C.

Caryn Laska MEM/MBA'20
Area of Study: Energy and the Environment
School: Nicholas, Fuqua

Caryn Laska is a dual degree MEM/MBA Candidate studying energy & the environment and business. Prior to attending graduate school at Duke, Caryn was a consultant at Accenture working with electric and gas utility clients around the country. She is the co-president of Fuqua's Jewish Business Association and a Fellow at the Center for the Advancement of Social Entrepreneurship - Initiative on Impact Investing. After graduating, Caryn hopes to combine her passion for social impact and sustainability with a career in finance.

Bryn Lawson AB'21
Area of Study: Political Science
School: Trinity

Bryn Lawson is a junior in the Trinity College of Arts and Sciences. She plans to major in Political Science with a concentration in Political Behavior and Identities and pursue a certificate in Markets and Management. Over the course of her remaining three years at Duke, she aims to answer questions about political and economic decision-making and how political influences manifest themselves in small and large populations. She spent the summer interning for U.S. Senator Feinstein in her San Francisco office and working as the Legislative Director for Advocates for Responsible Treatment in Orange County, California. Outside of class and the Duke Student Alumni Board, Bryn spends her time singing in Duke Rhythm and Blue, for which she is Assistant Music Director, and the Duke Chorale and Chamber Choir, for which she is Tour Manager.

School: Trinity

Elana is from Seattle Washington. She is currently a freshman and plans on studying Public Policy and Policy Journalism and Media Studies. She is interested in sports marketing, media, and communications. Elana is involved in the Coach K Leadership Institute on campus as an intern and is involved in the Duke Sports Marketing department as an intern as well. In her freetime she volunteers, travels, writes, and skiis.

Spencer hails from Jericho, New York and is currently a junior at Duke. He plans on majoring in Public Policy, while completing the Markets and Management Certificate as well as the Policy Journalism and Media Studies Certificate. At Duke, Spencer writes for the Duke Chronicle in the sports section, where he primarily covers women’s basketball, men’s tennis and women’s tennis. He enjoys playing tennis on the club team.

Eric Little AB'21

Eric Little is a Reginaldo Howard Memorial Scholar at Duke pursuing a double-major in Economics and Visual Arts. Eric previously served as the Vice President of the Class of 2021 and he is deeply involved in mentorship, working as a tutor for Student U and a program coach for Audacity Labs. Eric is passionate about business and serves on the executive board of Black in Business and is a member of Scale and Coin Business Society. He hopes to further develop this business acumen and is interning at McKinsey and Company during the summer of 2019.

School: Trinity

Ally Livingston is a senior from Ridgefield, CT, studying public policy with a policy journalism and media studies certificate. She is interested in the intersection of politics and media, as well as issues related to democracy and voting rights. On campus, she is the student assistant in the Sanford Office of Development and Alumni Relations, Let America Votes Organizing Fellow for North Carolina, and a member of Duke Democrats. She looks forward to working with DSAB in her last year at Duke to help bridge the gap between students and alumni.

School: Fuqua

Lauren is originally from Connecticut. She completed her undergraduate degree at Georgetown University.  She then spent four years in New York working in marketing before entering the full-time MBA program at Duke's Fuqua School of Business. Lauren is a Fuqua admissions ambassador and a member of the Marketing Club cabinet. Outside of school, Lauren enjoys live music and baking.

Maddy Mumma AB'16, JD'20
Area of Study: Juris Doctor
School: Law

Maddy was born in Durham and went to Duke for undergrad, where she double-majored in Global Public Health and Psychology. After graduating in 2016, Maddy worked in Raleigh at the North Carolina Justice Center and then thru-hiked the Appalachian Trail in three months before starting law school at Duke in the fall of 2017. At Duke Law, Maddy is a the President of the Duke Law Student Government, a Lead Articles Editor for the Law & Contemporary Problems journal, a research assistant for Professor Brandon Garrett, a member of the Mock Trial Board, Vice President of the Government and Public Service Society, and a case manager for the Duke Law Innocence Project. During the summer after her first year, Maddy worked in the criminal division of the U.S. Attorney's Office in Seattle. She spent this summer at Williams & Connolly in Washington, D.C. In her spare time, Maddy enjoys hiking, running, and watching documentaries.

Brian Njoroge AB'20
Areas of Study: Public Policy/International Comparative Studies/Markets and Management
School: Trinity

Brian is a senior from Nairobi, Kenya pursuing a double-major in Public Policy and International Comparative Studies with a certificate in Markets and Management. He is interested in business, policy and sustainable international development and has had experiences working in Guatemala, Uganda and back home in Kenya. Brian has served as the vice president of the African Conversations Club and is involved with two Bass Connections teams doing research on open-source computer science curriculum and the value of care labor in the Global South. After graduation, Brian hopes to pursue a career in consulting before joining graduate school. During his free time, he loves running, reading African literature and photography.

Nicole Pashalis AB'22

School: Trinity

Nicole is from Queens, New York. She is a sophomore at the Trinity College of Arts & Sciences, pursuing a major in Psychology, minor in History, and Markets & Management certificate. After graduating, she plans to attend law school. On campus, Nicole is an editor for the law magazine, JURIS, and a member of Business Oriented Women (BOW). Additionally, she loves fashion, co-managing public relations for Duke’s fashion and lifestyle magazine, FORM, and is the apparel chair for her sorority. During her free time, she enjoys exploring new restaurants, watching crime TV shows, and spending time with her family and friends.

Garrett Perconti JD'20
Area of Study: Juris Doctor
School: Law

Garrett was born and raised in northern New Jersey. He attended Georgetown University, where he double majored in Government and Anthropology. After graduating in 2015, Garrett worked as a M&A/Corporate Paralegal at Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton in New York. At Duke, Garrett served as Co-President of the Business Law Society. This summer, he will be working at Simpson Thacher & Bartlett (New York) and Hogan Lovells (Washington, DC). In his spare time, Garrett enjoys exploring the Durham restaurant scene, working out, reading classic fiction, and watching Duke basketball.

Catherine Prater JD'20
Area of Study: Juris Doctor
School: Law

Catherine is from Birmingham, Alabama and graduated from Vanderbilt University, where she studied English and History as an interdisciplinary major. Before attending law school, Catherine worked in the insurance industry in London and New York. She also worked as an outreach coordinator for a nonprofit organization in Birmingham. In law school, Catherine is the former Vice President of Career Development for the Women Law Students Association and a Research Assistant for the Goodson Law Library.

Kiarash Rahmanian PA'21
Area of Study: Physician Assistant
School: Medicine

Kiarash graduated from the University of Florida (UF) Master of Public Health (MPH) program and became an adjunct professor in Epidemiology at the University of Central Florida. Afterward, he joined the UF Department of Community Health & Family Medicine as a Clinical Research Coordinator where he collaborated on 13 published articles, gave over 30 presentations, and worked on 8 federal grants. Currently, he is a Physician Assistant (PA) student at Duke University serving as the student representative to the North Carolina Academy of PAs (NCAPA) and a 2019 Paul Ambrose Scholar for the Association for Prevention Teaching and Research (APTR). He plans to engage with his fellow classmates and Duke University beyond his time within his program for many years to come.

School: Trinity

Allie is a senior from Philadelphia studying Environmental Science and Policy with an Earth and Ocean Sciences minor, focusing primarily on environmental education and food and agriculture. On campus, she is involved in the First-year Advisory Counselor Board, Duke University Science Olympiad, the Student Dining Advisory Committee, working with the Nicholas School, and the Club Ski team. In her free time, she enjoys movies and TV, cooking and baking, and playing guitar and cello.

Hey y'all, I'm Bria, a second year student in the Divinity School from Mobile, AL. I graduated from Huntingdon College in Montgomery, AL with a degree in Exercise Science. I am a Co-President of the Divinity Student Council, and I am passionate about the church and its recognition and eradication of the oppressive nature it can sometimes foster. I also love to play volleyball and vibe to Frank Ocean.

Amber N. Scott MTS'20
Area of Study: Master of Theological Studies
School: Divinity

Amber N. Scott is a second year Duke Divinity student pursuing a Master of Theological Studies. She has of Bachelor of Arts in Communications and Urban Studies from the University of Pennsylvania. After graduating from Penn in 2013, Amber launched her career at the National Basketball Association. During her time at the league she managed various global partnerships and marketing campaigns. Amber also co-founded the NBA's first-ever Black Employee Network, Dream in Color. She worked at the NBA for five years before enrolling at Duke in the Fall of 2018. At Duke, Amber is the Vice President of the Black Seminarians Union and a Graduate Resident. She is passionate about the intersection of religion, storytelling, advancing ministry beyond the four walls of the church, and social justice.

Valeria Silombria is a junior at Duke University studying psychology, political science, and art. She is a recipient of the David M. Rubenstein merit scholarship on campus for students committed to social engagement and resilience. At Duke, she is involved with Duke Student Government, House Council, Duke Innoworks, and the Duke Student Alumni Board.

Zachary is currently a Doctor of Medicine candidate at the Duke University School of Medicine. He is a previous graduate of the Masters of Biomedical Science Program at Duke and is interested in helping "non-traditional" students utilize the vast alumni network to stay connected to Duke after graduation.

Ameer Syedibrahim is a sophomore in the Pratt School of Engineering, pursuing a double major in Electrical & Computer Engineering and Computer Science. He has a great interest in machine learning and hopes to leverage this interest to create new AI solutions for humanity in the future. Outside of the classroom, Ameer loves reading, spending time with his friends, and watching Duke basketball. His primary goal at DSAB is to do his part in connecting alumni with current students and enriching the Duke Alumni network experience.

Jack is a Sophomore planning on majoring in Political Science, and is from New York City. In addition to serving on the Duke Student Alumni Board, Jack is a student manager for the baseball team, and is also a member of the student advisory board for the Office of Undergraduate Education.

Edgar Virguez PhD'20
Area of Study: Environment
School: Graduate

Edgar Virguez is a third-year Ph.D. candidate at the Nicholas School of the Environment (NSOE). His research evaluates the transition to a deeply decarbonized electric power sector, by incorporating operations research, data science and geospatial analysis into a common framework. Previously, he worked for a decade promoting the adoption of cleaner fuels in transport and industry throughout Latin America, while simultaneously advancing his academic administrative career. Edgar holds a M.Sc. in Environmental Engineering, a B.Sc. in Chemical Engineering and a B.Sc. in Environmental Engineering. Sarah Vondracek is a third year Master of Environmental Management and Master of Business Administration dual-degree student at Duke University's Nicholas School of the Environment and UNC Kenan-Flagler Business School. She graduated with a B.A. in Biology and Environmental Studies from Colgate University and has hands-on experience in environmental compliance, ecological research, environmental policy analysis, and the electricity generation industry. After graduation, Sarah is interested in supporting companies and utilities to integrate renewables, energy storage, and smart grid technologies.

Joyce Zhang PhD'19
Area of Study: Immunology
School: Graduate School

Joyce Zhang is a Ph.D. Candidate in the Department of Immunology, Duke University. She studies how microbiota and host immune system interact with each other in the gut. Other than research, Joyce is involved in several student organizations on campus. Currently, She is the Director of Finance of Graduate and Professional Student Council (GPSC) and the Graduate Student Co-Chair of the Duke Student Alumni Board (DSAB). Before this, Joyce was the president of the Duke Chinese Students and Scholars Association (DCSSA). During her presidency, Joyce organized the largest ever Duke China Forum (Fall 2016), with Dr. Xiqing Gao ('86 JD) and other 13 distinguished guest speakers and more than 400 audiences attended. The same year, Joyce also initiated the "Duke in touch (DIT)" series, inviting Duke faculty and alumni giving seminars to students in 2016. To date, more than 40 DIT seminars have been hosted. Before coming to Duke, Joyce graduated from Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. She is also one of the founding members of HKUST alumni association NC chapter.

Chris is an undergraduate student pursuing a degree in biomedical engineering and a certificate in Innovation & Entrepreneurship. He grew up in Beijing until the age of 14, then moved with his family to Irvine, CA. At Duke, Chris is involved with tissue engineering research in a BME lab, Engineering World Health Club, Bass Connections project on precision medicine, and the Duke Office of Licensing and Ventures. In his free time, Chris enjoys cooking, reading, playing the piano, Shotokan karate, and gothic architecture.

I am a senior from Corning, NY studying biomedical engineering with a minor in finance. I have one younger brother who is a senior in high school. At home I have a Shetland Sheepdog named Cordy. I love to be outdoors and stay active with pastimes like swimming, hiking, and traveling to new places. In high school I was a three sport athlete, and I am also an Eagle Scout. This past summer I had one of the best months of my life studying abroad in Greece while taking a philosophy course. I am involved in many activities and organizations outside of my academic endeavors. Throughout the year, I play in intramural sports like flag football, basketball, and softball. I serve as a financial analyst for Duke University Union and as the treasurer for Duke Scouting Association which I co-founded with a peer during my first year at Duke. I also have a job on campus working as an equipment manager for the Duke Varsity Football team and enjoy it immensely. I am a proud graduate of the Duke University Police Department Citizen's Police Academy. In addition to these experiences, I am a member of a fraternity and spend great times with my brothers. And now, I am excited to represent the Duke Student Alumni Board and all of Duke University!
